Petition Text
Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled
Whereas:
Members of Parliament are elected to represent their constituents, often under a specific party affiliation or platform;
A change in party affiliation during a parliamentary term may alter the basis on which voters made their decision;
Canadians expect transparency and accountability in democratic representation; and
There is currently no formal requirement for Members of Parliament to seek constituent input when changing their party affiliation.
We, the undersigned,citizens and residents of Canada,, call upon theGovernment of Canadato establish a formal process requiring any Member of Parliament who changes their party affiliation during a parliamentary term to seek the approval of their constituents through a transparent and democratic mechanism before continuing to sit under a new affiliation.
