Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) Call to Action 42 calls upon the federal government to recognize and implement Indigenous justice systems consistent with Treaty and Aboriginal rights, the Constitution Act, 1982, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples;

Indigenous peoples in Canada continue to face discrimination and overrepresentation in the Canadian justice system; and

Recognizing Indigenous justice systems would support reconciliation and improving their experiences with the justice system

We, the undersigned,citizens and residents of Canada, call upon theGovernment of Canadato commit to the full recognition and implementation of Indigenous justice systems in accordance with Call to Action 42 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, including by working with Indigenous communities to support Indigenous justice programs to reform sentencing principles, develop more restorative programs and expand Indigenous courts, while providing sustainable funding for this cause.
